Citrix Systems announces End of Life for Presentation Server 4.5 and XenApp 5.0 on Windows Server 2003 by March 31, 2013.

How does this affect users of Presentation Server 4.5 or XenApp 5.0 on Windows Server 2003?

Once a Citrix product release reaches its End of Life date, the customer may continue to use the product within the terms of the product licensing agreement but the available support options will be limited. While there may be historical information in the Knowledge Center or other online resources, it is no longer updated and is provided on an as-is basis. Source.

In more detail, this means that as of October 1, 2012 these versions are no longer eligible for: non-critical hotfix maintenance, critical hotfix maintenance, feature enhancements and new hardware support.

And that starting April 1, 2013 these versions will no longer be eligible for: security-related hotfix maintenance, paid technical support and product specific information that is available in the online Citrix Knowledge Center.

Last call to upgrade to Citrix XenApp on Windows Server 2008!

Because protecting the stability and the security of your user environments is key, it becomes quite urgent for all who are still using the older versions, to upgrade to XenApp on Windows Server 2008. To move from XenApp 4.5 or 5.0 on Windows Server 2003, the best practice is to build a new server(farm) running Windows 2008 R2 from scratch. Then (if you want) you can install XenApp 6.5.

Pre-production testing with real user loads will make sure all works well before going live

In every upgrade scenario: moving to a new version of Windows Server, moving to a newer version of XenApp, or upgrading both at the same time, protecting the end-user experience will be key. To make sure this experience remains acceptable (or better, improves..) it is necessary to test up-front what the exact impact will be of the intended upgrades, on the performance of the virtual desktop environment.

Testing the impact up-front will allow you to better size the necessary hardware (servers and storage) for the new software environment. It will also allow you to stress test the new environment before rolling out to larger user groups into production. This best practice will keep you out of trouble and your users happy.
